It was established to be Phanom Sarakham district in 1894.
In 1937 the district office was moved from Ban Mueang Mai, Phanom Sarakham subdistrict to Ban Nong Ri, Mueang Kao subdistrict.[1]
Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Sanam Chai Khet, Plaeng Yao, Ratchasan of Chachoengsao Province, Si Mahosot and Si Maha Phot of Prachinburi Province.
The important water resource is the Khlong Tha Lat.
The district is subdivided into 8 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 86 villages (muban). There are four subdistrict municipalities (thesaban tambon) within the district - Ko Khanum, Phanom Sarakham and Khao Hin Son each cover parts of the same-named tambon, and Ban Song the whole same-named tambon. There are further 7 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
